The Dos and Don’ts of Using Face Masks

The Dos and Don’ts of Using Face Masks

In this new era where masks have become a necessity for protecting ourselves and others against the spread of infectious diseases, knowing the dos and don’ts of using face masks is crucial. Wearing a mask is a simple and effective way to reduce the risk of transmission, but it is essential to wear and handle them correctly. Here are some guidelines to follow when using face masks:

Do wear a mask in public settings: Masks are recommended to be worn in places where it is difficult to maintain proper social distancing, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, and public transportation. By wearing a mask, you are not only protecting yourself but also those around you.

Do choose the right type of mask: With several types of masks available, it is important to choose the one that provides adequate protection. N95 respirators are intended for healthcare workers and offer the highest level of protection against airborne particles. For the general public, surgical masks and cloth masks are suitable options. Cloth masks should have multiple layers and fit snugly over the nose, mouth, and chin.

Do ensure a secure fit: A mask should fit securely over your nose and mouth with no gaps on the sides. To achieve a proper fit, adjust the nose wire to mold it against your nose and pull the bottom of the mask down to cover your chin. Avoid touching the mask to readjust it while wearing it to prevent contamination.

Do practice good hand hygiene: Before putting on a mask, wash your hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. After wearing a mask, avoid touching your face or adjusting the mask, and when removing it, wash your hands again immediately.

Do store and clean your mask properly: When not wearing a mask, it should be stored in a clean breathable bag or container. Cloth masks should be washed regularly with soap and hot water and dried completely before reuse.

Don’t wear a mask with a valve: Masks with valves may seem more comfortable to wear because they allow easier exhalation, but they actually provide no protection to others. Valved masks allow unfiltered breath to escape, potentially spreading infectious particles from the wearer. Therefore, it is best to opt for masks without valves for the safety of those around you.

Don’t wear a mask below your nose: Wearing the mask below your nose defeats the purpose of wearing one. Your mouth and nose need to be fully covered to prevent the release of respiratory droplets. Ensure that your mask is fitted securely over both your nose and mouth.

Don’t wear a mask that is too loose or tight: A mask that is too loose may not provide adequate protection, while a mask that is too tight can be uncomfortable and may cause breathing difficulties. It is important to find the right balance for a secure and comfortable fit.

Don’t touch the front of the mask: Once you have put on your mask, avoid touching the front surface as it may be contaminated with germs. If you need to remove or adjust your mask, do so using the ear loops or ties.

Don’t reuse disposable masks: Disposable masks are designed for single-use only and should be discarded after each use. Attempting to sanitize or reuse them may compromise their effectiveness and increase the risk of transmission.

By following these dos and don’ts, you can significantly contribute to curbing the spread of infectious diseases. Wearing a mask is a simple act that shows consideration and respect for the well-being of ourselves and those around us. Let us embrace this new norm and make it a collective effort to protect one another. Stay safe, stay healthy!
